Tasks

Welcome to Daimler Truck and Buses! We always strive to advance all those who keep the world moving. Transportation is the backbone of our economy and modern life. Without transportation, factories could no longer produce anything, supermarkets would have no products to sell and travel would be unimaginable for people.

Our commitment to society and the environment determines our daily business. Our aim is to make the world cleaner, safer, more efficient and more comfortable through our actions. We firmly believe in the importance of highly innovative technology and are always aware of our social responsibility when developing our products.

Developments such as digitalization, autonomous driving and e-mobility represent a fundamental transformation of the transport sector that constantly brings new challenges. To ensure a successful future, we rely on close and trusting cooperation - both with our customers and with our globally active team of highly competent and motivated employees. Become part of our team, experience the fascination of our industry and actively contribute to the success of Daimler Trucks and Buses!

The department ‘Architecture and Powernet’, as the central instance, has group-wide responsibility for the E/E architecture and its essential elements, such as the distribution of electronic control units (ECUs), feature and function allocation, communication via networks, power supply via low-voltage Bordnet and many more. Together as a global team, we are currently paving the way to the Software-Defined Truck and are facing one of the biggest changes in the history of Daimler Truck. This is where you come in:

Your tasks:

  • Familiarization with automotive SW architectures
The basic knowledge on automotive SW architectures, the different types, their advantages and disadvantages, and the historical development shall be investigated and prepared as an introduction into the thesis. The idea of mixed-criticality SW architectures, their importance on the way to software-defined vehicles and their elements shall be worked out in detail.
  • Identification of software component characteristics with a focus on automotive
KPIs of zones in zonal E/E architectures shall be identified in literature. Those shall represent metrics respectively characteristics to describe the quality of a drawn zone. The KPIs will serve as a basis for the latter case study.
  • Familiarization with semiconductor designs used in automotive industry
The current E/E architectures at Daimler Truck will be analyzed and classified into the history of automotive E/E architectures. One exemplary E/E architecture will be chosen for the case study.
  • Familiarization with the idea of a System-on-a-Chip
To ensure that the case study will be performed in a transparent, reproducible and trustworthy way, an appropriate guideline shall be identified in literature.
  • Exploration of existing frameworks to map function to semi design
Reviewing relevant literature, a set of algorithms to converge sensors and actuators into zones shall be identified. The advantages and disadvantages of the respective algorithm shall be presented.
  • Implementation and adaptation of a new or an existing framework using GitHub
The sensor and actuator distribution of the selected architecture shall be prepared and edited in a format suitable for the algorithms identified in literature.
  • Validation of the framework with an existing SW and HW architecture of Daimler Truck AG
The identified algorithms shall be implemented in a common programming language, as e.g. Python. Once implemented, the various algorithms shall be applied on the data set of the selected E/E architecture.
  • Elaboration and documentation
The basic knowledge acquired as part of this thesis as well as the realization and implementation should be elaborated and documented in a Master's thesis in accordance with the relevant study regulations. In addition, an outlook and a recommendation for follow-up work should be given.
